Scripture Reading
1 Samuel 8, John 8:34-36
1 When Samuel grew old, he appointed his sons as Israel’s leaders. 2 The name of his firstborn was Joel and the name of his second was Abijah, and they served at Beersheba. 3 But his sons did not follow his ways. They turned aside after dishonest gain and accepted bribes and perverted justice.
4 So all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah. 5 They said to him, “You are old, and your sons do not follow your ways; now appoint a king to lead us, such as all the other nations have.”
6 But when they said, “Give us a king to lead us,” this displeased Samuel; so he prayed to the Lord. 7 And the Lord told him: “Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king. 8 As they have done from the day I brought them up out of Egypt until this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so they are doing to you. 9 Now listen to them; but warn them solemnly and let them know what the king who will reign over them will claim as his rights.”
10 Samuel told all the words of the Lord to the people who were asking him for a king. 11 He said, “This is what the king who will reign over you will claim as his rights: He will take your sons and make them serve with his chariots and horses, and they will run in front of his chariots. 12 Some he will assign to be commanders of thousands and commanders of fifties, and others to plow his ground and reap his harvest, and still others to make weapons of war and equipment for his chariots. 13 He will take your daughters to be perfumers and cooks and bakers. 14 He will take the best of your fields and vineyards and olive groves and give them to his attendants. 15 He will take a tenth of your grain and of your vintage and give it to his officials and attendants. 16 Your male and female servants and the best of your cattle and donkeys he will take for his own use. 17 He will take a tenth of your flocks, and you yourselves will become his slaves. 18 When that day comes, you will cry out for relief from the king you have chosen, but the Lord will not answer you in that day.”
19 But the people refused to listen to Samuel. “No!” they said. “We want a king over us. 20 Then we will be like all the other nations, with a king to lead us and to go out before us and fight our battles.”
21 When Samuel heard all that the people said, he repeated it before the Lord. 22 The Lord answered, “Listen to them and give them a king.”
Then Samuel said to the Israelites, “Everyone go back to your own town.”
John 8:34-36
34 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

Series: When We Stop Believing in Sin
This Week’s Title: Part IV: Sin Makes Us Slaves
Series Summary: The purpose of this sermon series is to help us understand what sin is, how it operates, and what happens when we have a light view of sin.
Sermon Summary: We choose sin thinking that it’ll give us more freedom and power but the exact opposite follows. We become slaves. Sin will eventually have a king-like presence over us. Real freedom is ours when we live under the true and only worthy King, Jesus.

Coffee pick up Volunteers Urgently Need
Thank you to our volunteers that have been faithfully picking up and dropping off the coffee each week to keep us caffeinated and ready to worship! We’re in need for some volunteers to join the coffee rotation for the second half of the year. Especially the next 2 Sundays. It’s a simple yet meaningful way to serve our church family every Sunday.
The pick up and drop off location for the coffee is the McDonald's at Sheppard and Leslie (1125 Sheppard Ave East). Coffee will be already ordered and ready for pick up at 10:00AM each Sunday. The same volunteer will then return the carafes to the same location after service. Coffee volunteers will be required to be at church by 10:30AM on the day of the pick up.
Please use the sheet below to sign up for a week to pick up and drop off the coffee:

New Parents’ Ministry
We are launching a ministry for new parents (parents of children ages 2 and younger). It will take place every Sunday, beginning August 3rd at 11:15am in rm 131. It will be a time of worship, learning, and connection needed during this spiritually challenging time.
Summer Regional Potlucks - Coming This August!
This August, we’re excited to gather for a series of **Regional Potlucks**—a special opportunity for fellowship, food, and connection! Members of our church community will be opening their homes to host potlucks in different neighborhoods, creating space to share a meal and meaningful conversation.
If you’re interested in attending a potluck near you, **sign-up sheets are available at the Resource Table in the foyer**.
Let’s take time this summer to strengthen our bonds and break bread together!
Men's Prayer Gathering
Please join us after service every first Sunday of the month from 12:30pm-1:00pm for a time of interceding for each other, our families, careers, ministries, personal challenges and spiritual wellness.
online giving
If you’d like to support our ministry, you can do so on our website, under the 'Giving' tab. We know that giving and generosity is part of the Christian life but we also know that we are in unique circumstances. So let it be that we give what we have decided in our hearts to give and not under compulsion (2 Corinthians 9:7).
